The Chrome Tom Thumb Bit has a 5" copper jointed mouthpiece and 6" cheeks. These bits are often used to make the transition from a ring snaffle to a longer shanked snaffle or curb bit. A snaffle bit is the most common bit used and acts with direct pressure. They work on the bars, poll and corners of the mouth. Copper causes the horse's mouth to salivate which allows the mouth to stay soft and useable to the rider. Tom thumb snaffle bits are a great choice for all types of training.

Cheeks refers to the sides of the bit, it includes both the purchase and the shank. The purchase is the part of the bit above the mouthpiece. A short purchase allows the bit to act quicker in a horse's mouth when the reins are pulled. With a longer purchase the bit is slower to react. The shank is the part of the bit located below the mouthpiece, it gives the rider leverage on the mouthpiece. The shorter the shank, the less control; the longer the shank, the more control the rider has.
