Goodyear Leather Welt construction makes for a long lasting motorcycle boot. Leather welts expand and contract with changing temperatures and this natural flex decreases welt splitting and breaking. Plus, this construction style is easier to resole because the welt (which holds the sole on) is stitched to the insole.
Although the welts have this natural flex, lateral support is second to none. Leather welts are very difficult to twist, and lateral support is especially important on uneven terrain or general work conditions where there is a lot of foot motion.
The leather uppers are tanned using oils to protect and lubricate the fiber. They are generally thicker leathers and are considered work leathers although many styles are often used as casual boots.
The midsole is like building the foundation of a house. A solid foundation provides proper foot support and starts with a 4 iron rubber midsole which allows a solid adhesion to the outsole. The signature look for a Chippewa® welted boot is the robus midsole. This construction increases rigidity and reduces extreme flexibility in new boots. The boot creates a flex point and breaks in to your foot within a few days of being worn. Boots with robus midsoles demand to be worked, not babied.
The Vibram® Chippewa® Nitrile sole is designed for all applications where stability and comfort are key.
This is a traditional work sole design which provides a stable platform for hours on your feet. The exclusive Vibram® compound provides maximum traction on wet/dry surfaces and various terrain.

This makes the 3rd year I've owned a pair of these boots, I've worn them everyday through college and several warehouse and manufacturing environments. I've worn the tread on the bottom totally smooth, and they're just now wearing out. I definitely will be interested in purchasing a new pair of these particular boots to replace the old ones; they've been through everything and just kept on going! I highly recommend anyone who wants a good, solid pair of boots to give these a try!
