LaDonna, I was "googling" Rolling Thunder and I came across your blog. What a wonderful tribute to your father and to ALL veterans. I visited the wall during Rolling Thunder 15 years ago, My son was 5 and I was in a camero. We watched the parade on the sidewalk. I was 23 years old. This year My son is serving in Baqubah, Iraq with the 1st Calvary. They say deployment does strange things to mothers. After obtaining my MSF certification and PA license, I am prepared to travel to the 20th Annual Run to the Wall. My son is 20 years old and a soldier. I also feel out of my element and yet compelled to complete this tribute to ALL our veterans and to my son's Unit. Thank you for giving this Army Mom a boost of confidence :)

Yes, I know the feeling. Both at large gathering, when the war dead, wounded and participants are remembered. Here in New Zealand, that is at dawn on April 25, each year -- ANZAC Day. My dad served as a World War Two coast watcher in the Solomon Islands, worked in co-operation with American soldiers, got sick and was wrecked emotionally. (He never entirely overcame the emotional stuff and the residual malaria assisted him to an early death aged 59.) I stand with thousands in the city as the dark night sky slowly lightens, with a lump in my throat, thinking of my father and of my grandfather's two brothers who were killed in the trenches at Gollipoli in Turkey and in northern France during the First War.

And I know the feeling of riding with hundreds of others, although on silent road bikes, not motor cycles. I've ridden five times now in a ride over hills to Akaroa harbour from here. The thrill of riding from the start line with so many others around you is -- awesome.

Should try it on a motor cycle some day, LaDonna. What happens to the bikes that hit a mechanical issue in a group that big. In the road race I'm talking about, the rider moves to the side of the road and changes a tyre. Or whatever. A Harley would require a motorcycle mover?

Well done LaDonna!! It was, in fact, one of the most moving experiences I've ever had and truly a great day for all American's. It is pathetic that an event of this magnitude and patriotism was brushed aside by the media on all levels. God bless our armed forces and God Bless America!!!
