The Stainless Steel Medium Port Curb Bit has a 5" sweet iron polished medium port and 8" cheeks. Sweet iron is intended to rust, it produces a sweet taste as rusting occurs. The copper inlay causes the horse's mouth to salivate which allows the mouth to stay soft and useable to the rider. Curb bits are leverage bits generally used when riding with one hand. They work on the bars of the mouth, under the chin (with the use of a curb strap), and over the poll. Curb bits have a solid ported mouthpiece that relieves the horse's tongue pressure. Sweet iron curb bits are a popular choice with novice riders riding trained horses.
Cheeks refers to the sides of the bit, it includes both the purchase and the shank. The purchase is the part of the bit above the mouthpiece. A short purchase allows the bit to act quicker in a horse's mouth when the reins are pulled. With a longer purchase the bit is slower to react. The shank is the part of the bit located below the mouthpiece, it gives the rider leverage on the mouthpiece. The shorter the shank, the less control; the longer the shank, the more control the rider has.
